What is EMDR therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy technique that uses bilateral eye movements or other rhythmic stimulation while recalling traumatic memories to help the brain reprocess and reduce their emotional charge.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured psychotherapy approach that combines guided recall of distressing memories with bilateral stimulation, typically through rapid eye movements. During a session, a therapist guides you through a series of phases: establishing safety and coping resources, identifying the trauma memory and related feelings, and then activating that memory while engaging in bilateral eye movements as the therapist moves a finger or object from side to side across your visual field. The theory underlying EMDR suggests that traumatic memories become "stuck" and lose their emotional intensity when the brain can process them while engaged in this simultaneous bilateral activity.

EMDR sessions typically last 60 to 90 minutes and are customized to your pace. You remain awake and aware throughout, retaining control over what you disclose. The technique is primarily used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but practitioners also apply it to anxiety, depression, grief, and other conditions rooted in distressing memories.
