What is a Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW)?
A Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) is a mental health professional licensed by the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation to diagnose and treat mental health and substance abuse disorders independently, without clinical supervision.
An LISW holds the highest level of social work licensure in South Carolina, permitting autonomous clinical practice in diagnosis, psychotherapy, and treatment planning for mental health and substance abuse issues. To earn this credential, practitioners must hold a master's or doctoral degree in social work from an accredited program, complete supervised clinical experience (typically 4,000 hours), and pass the clinical examination.
The key distinction from an LMSW (Licensed Master Social Worker) lies in independence and scope. An LMSW requires ongoing clinical supervision from a licensed independent practitioner, while an LISW operates without supervisory oversight. This autonomy makes LISWs qualified to establish private practices, manage complex clinical cases, and accept insurance billing directly. In Columbia, many mental health counseling providers hold LISW credentials, particularly those in solo practices or clinical leadership roles.
LISWs must maintain continuing education requirements to renew their license every two years and adhere to South Carolina's code of ethical conduct for social workers. The credential is distinct from Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) in states that use that terminology, but functions similarly in terms of independent practice authority.
